The FIVB Development Centre in collaboration with Barbados Volleyball Association, National Olympic Academy, Barbados Community College, National Sports Council and Powerade recently held a volleyball clinic for primary school class 4 students. The clinic was conducted at the National Sports Council from May 18th – June 24th 2010, with FIVB Regional Technical Director Dan Girleanu and Sport Management Intern, Ryan Brathwaite.
An estimated number of 55 students attended the clinic from 4 primary schools in the area of the sports council grounds. These schools are: St. Paul’s Primary, St. Giles Primary, Charles F. Broome Primary and Grantley Prescod Memorial.
Students were introduced to basic volleyball skills which they grasped with much enthusiasm. Students also got the opportunity to meet Barbadian athletes Shari Matthews and Anisa Wood who have reached the Professional level in volleyball and are currently playing in Spain and Italy. They also meet with 4 time MVP national player Elwyn Oxley and Beach Volleyball Manager, Mr. Paul White who exposed the students to the beach aspect of the game.
They were also most privileged to tour the Barbados Olympic Museum and meet the Director’s of the Olympic Academy and Association.
Major Sponsor of the clinic Powerade supplied the students with powerades which assisted with the rehydration of the students.
