PAN AMERICAN GAMES -
2007
On the 24th of August
2002, the host-city election date for the 2007 Pan-American Games, Rio's
bid arrived in Mexico City, and presented itself with tremendous
strength to ODEPA's Assembly. Mayor César Maia; the former Minister for
Sport and Tourism, Caio de Carvalho; the Municipal Secretary for Sports
and Leisure, Ruy Cezar; the State Secretary for Sports at the time,
Asfilófio de Oliveira; the former Municipal Secretary for Tourism, José
Eduardo Guinle; the BOC's president, Carlos Arthur Nuzman and the
director of international affairs for the bid, Carlos Roberto Osório
were there to represent Rio.
The final presentation highlighted the social legacy of the Games for
Brazil and Latin America as a whole, on the understanding that sport is
a vehicle for social inclusion. The presentation created an even greater
impact because the video presented statements by President Fernando
Henrique Cardoso, and of the four main candidates running for the
presidency of Brazil at that time.
All of them reaffirmed
publicly their support and commitment to Rio with its project of staging
the Rio 2007 Pan American Games, allied to the professional expertise
and work under COB's leadership.
With so many positive aspects in its favor, Rio ended up celebrating the
victory with 30 votes to 21 - the largest difference in votes ever
obtained by a city bidding to host the Pan American Games. In the
election, the 51 votes were cast by 42 American countries: Brazil,
United States, Mexico, Colombia, Canada, Argentina, Venezuela, Puerto
Rico and Cuba had already hosted the Games and for this reason had
double votes.
