Olympic Day Celebrations In Barbados

Today is Olympic Day around the world. On Saturday, The Barbados Olympic Association Inc. launched a week of activities to celebrate Olympic Day with a walk, race and run from its headquarters in Wildey that featured over 300 participants from 16 national federations.

Representatives of Badminton, Boxing, Fencing, Hockey, Judo, Netball, Orienteering, Paralympics, Rugby, Special Olympics, Squash, Table Tennis, Triathlon, Volleyball, Wrestling and Wushu all took to the streets to raise awareness of sports.

BOA’s President Steve Stoute welcomed participants and read the Olympic Day message on behalf of the IOC President, Thomas Bach. In it, he reminded participants that “Olympic Day is for everyone, regardless of age or athletic ability and although it commemorates a historic event, its goals are aimed at the future and particularly at young people.”

Stoute continued that Olympic Day, “is an opportunity to remind people that sport in not just watching. We want to inspire all people to get active and to have fun.”

And fun was had by all at the Olympic Centre. After the road event, persons were treated to a cross fit challenge.

The Olympic Day activities continue today at the BOA headquarters with tours of the Olympic Academy and games for Primary Schools during the day. In the evening, the national federations are invited back to the BOA for traditional Barbadian games like road tennis and hopscotch and authentic local food.
