Women & Sport Commission Stages Women’s Day ‘Pledge for Parity’

The Barbados Olympic Association Inc. (BOA) Women and Sport Commission successfully staged its International Women’s Day ‘Pledge for Parity’ 5K run/walk at its headquarters on March 6 2016.

With a noticeable increase in participants from previous years, the event attracted approximately 300 people, including men and children.

Women and Sport Committee member, Ytannia Wiggins, said that she was pleased with the turnout.

“The turnout was good. It was as expected because we advertised with the National Federation and some of the International NGO’s (Non-governmental Organisations), she said. “It’s up from the numbers we had last year, so that’s really good.”

The event aimed at promoting and celebrating women in sports, saw the participation of many men, and this according to National Sports Council (NSC) Assistant Director Mona Alleyne, was “a good sign”.

“In recent years we’ve noticed an increase of the men coming out to support it. . .we are glad to see that the men are supporting our cause,” Alleyne said.

The day’s events featured a 5K run/walk, a Zumba session, the Patsy Callender challenge and a cheerleading display by the Christ Church Girls Green Stars.

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, political achievements of women. The day also marks a call-to-action for accelerating gender parity.
